February 3, 2011 The Gaston Gazette interviewed Clay to promote his Feb 23 concert in Charlotte, NC. He talked about the tour being low key, with the potential to change things up. He also discusses staying power and the enthusiasm of the fans. February 4, 2011 Clay was interviewed for Miami Herald's Gay South Florida blog. He discussed coming out, his work with GLSEN, his upcoming tour, and using technology to stay connected to family during the tour. 2011 News   
February 5, 2011 Miamiartzine profiled Clay for his Feb 10 concert at the Adrienne Arsht center in Miami. Clay said that he wanted to surprise the audience with some songs. If he woke up and could not sing any more, he said he would return to teaching. 2011 News   
February 7, 2011 Clay participated in "Broadway Backwards", in which singers perform a song usually sung by the other gender. This show benefited Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. February 8, 2011 Playbill.com featured photos of many artists from the "Broadway Backwards" concert at the Longacre Theatre on Feb. 7. Clay was included in the slide show. 2011 News   
February 10, 2011 Clay gave an interview to lgbt magazine David for his upcoming Atlanta show. He discussed the songs on the album and the upcoming tour. He also discussed his friendship with Michael Buble, and how their singing styles are different. He mentioned the possibility of upcoming projects with his friend Ruben Studdard. February 10, 2011 Clay was interviewed by Steve Wildsmith. He discussed his preference for a romantic style over a "rat pack" style. He also discussed songs that he can adapt to his style. Clay also discussed press focus on his personal life, that he considers himself a performer, not an artist, and despite not being a song-writer, enjoys the technicalities and eccentricities of a song. 2011 News   
February 14, 2011 Patricia Sheridan interviewed Clay for a print interview and a longer podcast. They discussed whether he's romantic, what distracts him during songs, and Clay's work with GLSEN on the serious issue of bullying of students. 2011 News   
February 16, 2011 Clay was interviewed by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He said that the category of songs with great melodies sung by great singers fits him like a glove. He also discussed coming out. He said Christians often get a "bad rap" and that many Christians are "supportive and loving and accepting." 2011 News   
February 17, 2011 Clay was included with Nat King Cole, Barbra Streisand and other artists in a Napster playlist called "The Eyes Have It." The theme was songs including the word "eyes." Clay's song "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" was included. 2011 News   
February 17, 2011 Clay was interviewed by Scott Tady for his upcoming Pittsburgh show. He gave advice to local AI contestant Kenzie Palmer. He talked about performing Moon River. Clay also remarked on Pittsburgh's beauty, especially its rivers. 2011 News   
February 17, 2011 Clay was interviewed by vindy.com. He discussed the inspiration for the album cover. He also gave his opinion on Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez as judges, noting that their background as performers was a positive. 2011 News   
February 18, 2011 Clay was interviewed by Greenville online for his upcoming show in Charlotte, NC. He noted that he chose songs for the Tried and True album by singing them in the shower. He promised that the songs would be the stars of the show; he did not plan any elaborate production on the tour. 2011 News   
February 18, 2011 Metromix in Greenville, SC, interviewed Clay. They learned that Clay says Daughtry is the loudest rock group he listens to, that he goes into talk shows like Leno with some preparation but morning show are more spontaneous. He admires trumpeter Chris Botti, violinist Regina Carter, and saxophone player David Sanborn. He also discussed the influence of country music on his singing, emphasizing that it is traditionally about melody and lyrics. 2011 News   
February 23, 2011 Clay visited the Charlotte Today show on WCNC TV with hosts Colleen Odegaard and Rob Tanner. Colleen had previously interviewed Clay in 2004; he joked about her having cookies then, but none now. He's tired of sleeping on the tour bus but enjoys touring. The hosts asked if he was relieved to come out; he said no since he had been out to family and friends a long time; just not to "you." (public and media). Did he stay true to himself? He gave an example of being asked by a record exec to wear a leather jacket; he said it wouldn't be a believable image change for him. 2011 News   
February 23, 2011 Clay was interviewed by Glen Gamboa of Newsday. He loved American Idol since he could do something different each week. He said “ "In high school, I would always say, 'I can do other things, too.' That's followed me into adulthood. . . . I have a lot of different irons in the fire." He was asked about record labels He said that he prefers short-term deals to multi-album deals since it gives more flexibility in a rapidly changing music industry. Clay also noted that the music industry was more focused on immediate hits rather than careers that last. 2011 News   
February 24, 2011 Independent Mail (in Anderson, South Carolina) interviewed Clay before his Greenville concert. He discussed music and celebrity, noting that he needs to watch what he says like a politician or it ends up on gossip sites. He also noted that teh good outweighs the bad. His advice to aspiring artists is to stick to the root of who they are. In concert settings he tries to add fun interaction with the audience in addition to the music. He mentions that parenthood has changed his business decisions. He takes into account what is best for his family whereas previously he chose things that were fun. 2011 News   
March 4, 2011 Aidin Vaziri of the San Francisco Gate interviewed Clay. About "Tried and True", he commented that this album took seven years since there were multiple people involved with an album. He confirmed that the record deal was a one album deal, in response to a question about parting ways with his record label. He also prefers singing live to recording so does not have plans to go back into the studio. When asked whether the record industry is a headache, Clay answered "For me, it's not. I've been fortunate enough to do what I wanted. This record was more my doing than the earlier ones were. But it's still a business. I think it's not a headache if you understand that's what you're getting into." 2011 News   
March 8, 2011 Clay was interviewed in advance of his upcoming Mesa Concert (Mar 10). He talked about wanting to make "Tried and True" for years but now had the clout to be able to make the album. He was asked about the Mesa Arts center. He said one of his favorite recent concerts was in a similar intimate venue in Baltimore that allowed him to interact with the audience. In regard to his future plans, he said he had a few irons in the fire; also that he prefered singing live to being in the studio. 2011 News   
March 9, 2011 The National Inclusion Project announced that they received a $2000 grant from Macy's, which is designated to support the Project's LEAP Forward program. The LEAP Forward program gives children with and without disabilities the opportunity to serve their community together. March 10, 2011 Clay was interviewed by Tara Hitchcock of Arizona TV3. The video was shown on the show and was also available as a stream. She asked why he picked songs from before he was born. He said he was an "old soul" and that it was the first time he was permitted to make this type of album. He said that the music business is mostly businessmen making money; that only a small percent is art. With this being his fifth album, he was more comfortable taking the risk to do this album. She also asked about whether he was a strict parent. Clay said he was very strict because of his background as a special education teacher. Tara showed his DVD and said that it was spoken for; she told the other newscaster to get his own copy. 2011 News   
March 15, 2011 RCA released an American Idol 10th Anniversary album. Clay's "Invisible" was included as track 3 2011 News Compilations and Duets  
April 11, 2011 The prom episode started filming the week of April 11. There were some tidbits from the set. Lance Bass tweeted the script cover and a photo from the set. Kate Levering, a cast regular, tweeted a photo of Amanda Bearse, Clay and herself. Drop Dead Diva 2011 News  
April 12, 2011 TV Squad confirmed a rumor that Clay was cast in a guest role in the Lifetime Network show "Drop Dead Diva". He will be joining other openly gay guest stars in the cast. The episode was inspired by the real life case of a gay teen girl who was not allowed to go to the prom with her girlfriend. May 5, 2011 The Durham Bulls baseball team announced that Clay would sing the national anthem for their May 9th game. It will be held at a special event at the DAP. The DAP is the historic Durham Athletic Park, where the movie Bull Durham was filmed. The Bulls used it up through 1994. This is their 2nd annual "Back to the DAP" game. 2011 News Durham Bulls Game  
May 9, 2011 Clay was invited by the Durham Bulls to sing the national anthem before their second annual game at the old Durham Athletic Park. It was a beautiful evening. Four World War II biplanes flew overhead against a clear blue sky as Clay sang a beautiful version of the anthem. May 11, 2011 Clay was interviewed by Debra Morgan of WRAL TV. He was asked for his insight into Scotty McCreery's AI experience, based on his own. Clay mentioned how much he loved the experience, how he did not realize how big it was until he returned for the home town visit (Scotty's hometown visit to nearby Garner, NC was upcoming in a few days). He talked about how supportive the Raleigh Triangle region was of AI contestants and even said that he'd vote for Scotty. 2011 News WRAL News  
May 12, 2011 Clay joined other celebrities in filming video messages of congratulations to WRAL weatherman Greg Fishel in the segment called "O'Fishel" Wishes. Clay's video was aired on the WRAL 10 pm news on May 12. He recalled his own early wish to be a weatherman and how Greg had visited his school. 2011 News WRAL News  
May 23, 2011 Clay did a 25 minute interview with Debra Morgan of WRAL. This was a continuation of the interview from May 11. He talked about how he plans to take some time off from recording but wants to do some fun things. He mentioned filming Drop Dead Diva, a funnyordie video. He also mentioned the fun of singing for a friend's wedding, something he had not been able to do for years. Clay also mentioned being in talks for future projects. July 8, 2011 July 8, 2011 - A vendor on EBAY had posted several copies of an official Decca "promo" disk for Tried and True Live. This included a CD with the live versions of Build Me Up Buttercup, I'll Take Romance, and Suspicious Minds (different from the studio versions). The accompanying DVD included video of I'll Take Romance and In My Life (not on the commercial DVD). These were recorded/filmed at the March 2011 concert in Raleigh. July 16, 2011 The premiere of the funnyordie spoof video was held at the Outfest Film Festival in Los Angeles. Clay and Tori Spelling attended the event. Kristen Schaffer, the executive director of Outfest, did the introductions. Funny or Die Outfest  
July 17, 2011 Chris Trondsen of Pacific Rim Video interviewed Clay about filming Drop Dead Diva, the http://funnyordie.com skit, and future plans. Clay enjoyed being able to drive to Georgia to film Drop Dead Diva. He said the show has a great draw for guest stars. He did not meet Wanda Sykes or Lance Bass but enjoyed filming a scene with Amanda Bearse. He talked about the funnyordie skit and noted that Tori Spelling has a great sense of humor. July 17, 2011 The Drop Dead Diva episode "Prom" was premiered at a special panel at Outfest. Clay, series regulars April Bowlby and Ben Feldman, director Jamie Babbit, and executive producer Josh Berman participated. They screened the episode and participated in a Q&A about the significance of the episode to issues involving acceptance of the LGBT community. Outfest 2011 News  
July 18, 2011 Clay appeared on The Talk to promote the upcoming episode of Drop Dead Diva, featuring the story of Constance McMillen, who was banned from her prom. He also chatted about other topics, including Parker, whether he watches AI, and his thoughts on going back to teaching someday. The Talk 2011 News  
July 18, 2011 "Hoarders: Untold sTori" premiered on the funnyordie.com website. This is a site for irreverent and fun videos by celebrities, often spoofing current events or pop culture. Tori Spelling and husband Dean McDermott spoofed the show "Hoarders". Sally Kirkland and Clay also appeared in this video. Viewers can rate videos on this site as "Funny" or "Die". Within a few days, "Hoarders: Untold sTori" achieved an "Immortal" rating (over 100,000 views, with 80% or more "Funny" rating). July 24, 2011 Clay had a guest role in on the Lifetime network show Drop Dead Diva. The episode was entitled "Prom." Clay played a witness testifying about his mail order bride. October 7, 2011 2nd OFC Video Chat Clay participated in his second video chat for the OFC. Despite a contact lens that was bothering him, he chatted about a variety of topics, taking both presubmitted and chat-submitted questions. December 8, 2011 December 8, 2011 FM station WAJK in La Salle, Illinois posted a snippet of Clay's new song as part of a song battle with Ingrid Michaelson. This was our first introduction to the title - "Bring Back My Love." The snippet was 55 seconds. Clay's song won this song battle, as well as the battles on the next four nights and was "retired." December 9, 2011 Dec 9, 2011 Clay did a video interview on the Adam Carolla podcast show. Adam and Clay covered a wide variety of topics - how he came to recognize and understand his sexual orientation, the process of coming out to widening circles of friends, relatives, public (Adam made an analogy to an onion that you cut into...and your father cries.) Clay talked about AI and how it was his first experience with reality show "production"; discussed (and sang a capella!) his audition song - the theme from Perfect Strangers. They discussed their shared love of old sitcoms. Other topics were fame, tabloids, old sitcoms, teaching, love of touring. Clay talked about his teaching experience with special needs children and his love for the puzzle of learning how to reach children with behavioral disabilities; he also discussed the goals of the National Inclusion Project.
