January 1, 1992 1992 Raleigh Boychoir: Young Clayton Grissom was part of this choral group when he was 11-13 years of age. There is an adorable home video of him performing in a medley of 50s hits, including 'Great Balls of Fire' which he included in his Jukebox Tour many years later. Pre-Idol Experience   
January 1, 1992 From 1992 through 1997, Clay participated in a number of local stage productions, including playing 'Will Parker' in 'Oklahoma'. A costar in 'The Sound of Music' in 1995 was Frankie Muniz who went on to TV stardom in 'Malcolm in the Middle'. The two met again on the red carpet for 'X-Men 2'. Clay attended as part of the AI2 Top 5. Pre-Idol Experience   
January 1, 1997 1992-1998 Pieces of Gold: This is the annual showcase for the Wake County Public Schools in North Carolina. Clay participated as part of several school choral groups over his school years. His solo rendition of 'This is the Moment' in 1997 earned the only standing ovation of the night! Pre-Idol Experience   
September 1, 1998 Besides his school productions, Clay was active in the local music scene, appearing at numerous venues. He worked for an extended time with the group 'Just By Chance'. The band performed a blend of country, gospel and pop/rock standards. Pre-Idol Experience   
September 1, 1998 Whether it was belting out a gospel classic, playing a Santa with a one-track-mind (selling Clay cassettes) or working the audience, Clay owned the stage. He demonstrated the same talent and flare that a wider audience came to love during and after his stint on 'American idol'. Pre-Idol Experience   
October 17, 2002 Charlotte Audition - 10/17/02. Prior to his audition in Atlanta , Clay went to an audition in Charlotte . He sang "Somewhere over the Rainbow" and did not make it.  American Idol   
November 1, 2002 Atlanta Audition - 11/1/02; broadcast - 1/28/03. Clay walked into the audition room wearing a striped button-down shirt, and was asked "Why are you here?” His answer: "I'm the American Idol." Clay sang an a capella version of "Always and Forever.” Randy said, “I say yes." Simon said, "You don't look like a Pop Star, but you've got a great voice". They sent him to Hollywood. American Idol

December 1, 2002 Hollywood : The Glendale Auditions - December 2002; broadcast 1/29/03. Clay sang for only a short time. It was a bit of a custom melody. For the group auditions he sang Superstar. Clay makes it into the top 32. American Idol
