They chatted about the early hour for the show. Clay had spent 20 hours on the bus, including sleeping on it. He talked about being an old soul, how these songs were perfectly suited for his voice. Tom asked him about Vince Gil. Clay said he was amazing, did his guitar solo in one take. He said his mom was a big fan and that she was more excited for Vince's part of the album than Clay's singing. Maria asked him how much money in his pocket. He said not a dime, that people around him had his credit card number when he needed something. Clay called in from Baltimore. They discussed his March 5, Minneapolis show. Clay talked about the rush that he gets when the curtain goes up. He also said that 80% of the work he does is off-stage, but the 20% onstage is his favorite. Jason's favorite Clay song is Proud of Your Boy. Clay said it had been a dream to voice a Disney character so got to do that with POYB and singing with the orchestra. He also discussed how much he enjoyed last summer's tour with Ruben and would like to do it again some day. He also talked about being lucky to have great musicians on the TNT album - Linda Eder, Vince Gill, David Sanborn, Ruben. The call was dropped mid-interview. When he called back, he said he had just switched phone services from AT&T to Verizon. The DJs said that was a first - no one else had ever changed phone services during an interview | You Tube | | | February 14, 2011 | Breakfast with Series , Post Gazette Online - Pittsburgh | Clay was interviewed by Patricia Sheridan who does a regular "Breakfast With____" series for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She asked about whether he was romantic. He said he was pragmatic in his own life but gets swept in the romantic elements of the arts (plays, movies, TV). Was fame what he expected? He didn't fantasize about fame, so no preconceived notions. He said it's not all limos and parties. He's been surprised regularly by fame. How has fame changed him emotionally? He said he initially became jaded because everything changed so fast. However, then his life became the "new normal". He believes he's more cautious, wiser about dealing with fame, not as jaded as he was in the beginning because it's now his life and he knows how to traverse some of the perils. He hates being stared at and whispered about so is happy when he's out and about in Raleigh where it's no big deal for people to see him. What does he think about onstage? He admits that sometimes when he performs, it's like "muscle memory". He starts thinking about dinner or having a wedgy so he occasionally forgets the lyrics. What was the adjustment to his fame like for family? He said he doesn't like the spotlight when he's not onstage, that he is almost reclusive. He said his family - his cousin Jamie, brother, best friends, mother - all thought Clay would be famous before he started thinking about it. He used to worry more about interpretation of his words in interviews and would worry about it afterwards. Now he knows he's going to occasionally mess up, so he doesn't worry when that happens anymore. She asked about the bullying issue and the trip to DC on behalf of GLSEN. He said he was there for the unveiling of Sen. Franken's anti-bullying bill and making sure that sexual orientation and gender identity were included so that teachers could act on bullying for those reasons. He went to talk about the importance of that. He also mentioned that the press and media don't have a problem bullying him and that with anonymity on the internet that people can say the nastiest things. His mother sent him an article about him singing the national anthem at the upcoming hockey game; he said that the comments about him were nasty. He then went to look at other celebrity articles and found the same nastiness in the comments, for example in an article about Christina Aguilera. He mentioned the "fast-paced 24 hour news cycle." Also that with the internet, kids get cyberbullied now and gave the Tyler Clementi case as an example. He snarked with Ramona about him coming in 2nd at his audition many years ago but thanked her for introducing him to Quiana, now one of his best friends in the world. When asked about AI and Hollywood week, he said he distanced himself from the drama by rehearsing in the parking garage. He didn't give them the drama the producers wanted so he didn't get on camera that week. In regard to future projects, he said he and Ruben enjoyed touring so were trying to work on some things together.
